Questions people ask
before their first call.

From your phone and calling apps to the board, bridge and AI models. Each answer links to a guide with more detail.

The short answers

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. Parrot uses the phone and the number you already have. The board pairs to your phone over Bluetooth as a hands-free device — the same profile a car kit uses — so the call is a normal call on your own line. Nothing is ported and no number is issued.

How the phone link works ↗

Is this VoIP? Do I need a SIP trunk or a carrier account?

No. There is no SIP, no VoIP number and no carrier integration. The audio leaves your phone over Bluetooth, not over the internet, so whatever your phone can place a call in, Parrot can speak on.

Calls without VoIP ↗

Which calling apps work?

Any call your phone can carry on its hands-free channel: the normal dialer, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, Telegram, WeChat, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom and Discord.

Do I have to install an app on my phone?

No. The phone only pairs with the board over Bluetooth. Everything else runs in desktop Google Chrome and in Parrot Cloud.

Quickstart ↗

What hardware do I need?

One classic ESP32 (WROOM-32) board with a CP2102 or FTDI USB chip, and a USB data cable. The newer -S3, -C3, -C6 and -S2 parts are BLE-only and physically cannot carry a phone call.

Which board to buy ↗

How do I program the board?

In Google Chrome on a desktop, from the Parrot Bridge page, over Web Serial. There is no toolchain to install and nothing to download.

Open Parrot Bridge ↗

Why does a browser tab have to stay open?

The bridge is the program that connects your board to Parrot Cloud, and it runs inside the tab as WebAssembly. Closing the tab takes the line offline and drops an active call. Each board needs its own tab.

About the bridge ↗

Which AI models can speak on the call?

OpenAI Realtime, Ultravox and Gemini Live are available on Parrot's shared keys. You can also plug in your own vendor key and run calls on your own account.

AI providers ↗

Can my own AI agent place and answer calls?

Yes — that is what Parrot is for. Connect an MCP-capable agent such as Claude to your device and dialling out, answering an incoming call, listening along and steering mid-call become ordinary tool calls on the one line you gave it a key for.
